Jian Wang, Wen Zou

Frontiers of Medicine 2011, Volume 5, Issue 2,   Pages 123-126 doi: 10.1007/s11684-011-0124-z

Abstract: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has become widely used in the treatment of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) in China in recent years. In this article, we summarize the recent major developments in human immunodeficiency virus/AIDS (HIV/AIDS) treatment with TCM. The use of TCM is associated with preventing or alleviating HIV-related symptoms, reducing treatment side effects, and improving the quality of life. The potential beneficial effects of TCM should be confirmed through extensive and rigorous trials.

BIOINSECTICIDES AS FUTURE MAINSTREAM PEST CONTROL AGENTS: OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2022, Volume 9, Issue 1,   Pages 82-97 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2021404

Abstract:

Bioinsecticides are naturally-occurring substances from different sources that control insect pests. Ideal bioinsecticides should have low toxicity to non-target organisms. They should also be easily degraded in sewage treatment works and natural environments, highly effective in small quantities and affect target pests only. Public concerns about possible side-effects of synthetic pesticides have accelerated bioinsecticide research and development. However, to develop bioinsecticides into mainstream products, their high production costs, short shelf-life and often uncertain modes of action need to be considered. This review summarizes current progress on bioinsecticides which are categorized as biochemical insecticides and their derivatives, plant-incorporated protectants, and microbial bioinsecticides. The current constraints that prevent bioinsecticides from being widely used are discussed and future research directions are proposed.

Challenges and opportunities in improving left ventricular remodelling and clinical outcome following

Frontiers of Medicine 2021, Volume 15, Issue 3,   Pages 416-437 doi: 10.1007/s11684-021-0852-7

Abstract: Over the last half century, surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR) has evolved to offer a durable and efficient valve haemodynamically, with low procedural complications that allows favourable remodelling of left ventricular (LV) structure and function. The latter has become more challenging among elderly patients, particularly following trans-catheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Precise understanding of myocardial adaptation to pressure and volume overloading and its responses to valve surgery requires comprehensive assessments from aortic valve energy loss, valvular-vascular impedance to myocardial activation, force-velocity relationship, and myocardial strain. LV hypertrophy and myocardial fibrosis remains as the structural and morphological focus in this endeavour. Early intervention in asymptomatic aortic stenosis or regurgitation along with individualised management of hypertension and atrial fibrillation is likely to improve patient outcome. Physiological pacing via the His-Purkinje system for conduction abnormalities, further reduction in para-valvular aortic regurgitation along with therapy of angiotensin receptor blockade will improve patient outcome by facilitating hypertrophy regression, LV coordinate contraction, and global vascular function. TAVI leaflet thromboses require anticoagulation while impaired access to coronary ostia risks future TAVI-in-TAVI or coronary interventions. Until comparable long-term durability and the resolution of TAVI related complications become available, SAVR remains the first choice for lower risk younger patients.

From resource sharing to service sharing: opportunities and challenges of transparent computing

Zhang Yaoxue,Zhou Yuezhi

Strategic Study of CAE 2009, Volume 11, Issue 8,   Pages 10-17

Abstract:

With the rapid development of computer and network technologies, the computing paradigm has evolved from the original mainframe computing to desktop (PC) computing, and then to network computing, and even pervasive computing. However, the existing computing paradigms all follow the thinking model of single machine or joint-based single machine and thus are characterized as resource sharing. In the new era of network or pervasive computing, users are mainly concerned about services and service sharing, and accordingly the computing will also shift from being characterized as resource sharing to service sharing. This paper proposes a new computing paradigm, transparent computing, which aims for service sharing and presents the concept, architecture and key technologies of transparent computing. Moreover, it also gives the prospect of the impact and future development of transparent computing.
